Teach Me The Tricks

by Dana Schrader

I'm always trying to spend the least out of pocket possible when it comes to Walgreens and CVS.  With the help of their Register Rewards and Extra Care bucks and some pre-planning before I make my runs, it's very possible.  I was super excited when I read that Walgreens was going to be having Alka Seltzer free after their Register Rewards. On top of that, the Oral B toothbrush was still generating a Register Reward that made it free as well.  Then, we learned on Chat that you could get St. Ives products free after Register Rewards as well.  I saw the opportunity to get three products for very little out of pocket by rolling the register rewards.  Here's what I did.

Step 1:  Buy an Oral B CROSSACTION (must say Cross Action on it) toothbrush.  The cost for mine was $4.49.  I used a $3 Register Reward that I had so I paid $1.49 (+ tax). If you don't have any Register rewards to use then you will pay the $4.49 (+ tax) out of pocket first. At the end of the transaction, a register reward pops out for $4.50.

Step 2: Buy any St. Ives Elements product.  They are on sale this week for $4.99.  I also had coupons for Buy One Get One Free so I was able to purchase two. Your pre-tax total will be $4.99.  Now use the $4.50 Register Reward from the previous transaction to make your total $.49 (+ tax).  Another register reward pops out.  This one will say $2 but as we all know from Chat it is actually worth $5 (it will scan as $5).  I've been marking mine so I can remember and so the cashier's drawers aren't off. (You can also use a $2 coupon that you can print online  --  see the Walgreens double play list) but I did not have any ink left in my printer so I was not able to print them, plus, if I did, I would not have been able to use the $4.50 Register Reward unless I added something else to the order to cover the $2).

Step 3: Buy an Alka Seltzer Plus Cold (original flavor only). The plan here is to use the Register Reward we just earned which is worth $5.  Since the Alka Seltzer is only $4.99 I've been throwing in a small item (usually a candy bar for my husband or a pencial or a clearance item for $.25) to put the total over $5.  So you buy the Alka Seltzer plus a small filler item and use your $5 (which says $2 but is really $5) Register Reward.  Your total should be very small depending on your filler item. (For a Snicker bar and the Alka Seltzer, mine was $.70 including tax).  Then another Register Reward for $4.99 prints out.

You've only paid about $5 - $6 out of pocket and you've gotten a toothbrush, 1 - 2 St. Ives Elements products, and an Alka Seltzer (plus small filler) item and you have another $4.99 Register Reward to use in the future.

You can now, repeat Step 1, but this time since you have $4.99 Register Reward, you will need to add at least $.50 to the order so that you can use this Register Reward (the same way we added the filler in Step 3). Repeat the steps as many times as you'd like, as long as there is enough stock and the cashiers/managers let you.  I typically to this twice at each store and then move on to another store so as not to deplete their stock and to "stay under the radar."

Happy shopping!!!
